This tour takes you on a journey through Georgia’s unique cultural heritage. The tour includes the best of what this magnificent country has to offer. Visit the capital, Tbilisi – a pleasant, charming and dynamic city, and enjoy a variety of landscapes that are absolutely breathtaking. Over 15 days you will visit the country’s most important sites and discover Georgia’s most breathtaking landscapes, historical and cultural monuments and the majestic mountains of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus. You will also experience the warm hospitality of the Georgian people in beautiful, authentic towns and villages, often dominated by imposing medieval fortresses and monasteries.

Arrive in Tbilisi, meeting at the airport and transfer to the hotel.

Visit Tbilisi, the splendid capital of Georgia

Discover the capital of Georgia - Tbilisi, explore the old town with its cobbled streets and traditional houses with wooden balconies, on the banks of the Mtkvari River. We visit the sights of the city: the Metekhi church and its plateau with a magnificent view of the old town, the Narikala fortress - the ancient symbol of the city, the bath district (Abanotubani), famous for its sulphurous hot springs.

In the afternoon we visit the National Museum and its collections of "Golden Treasures" from Antiquity. At the end of the day we visit the Dry Bridge, a popular spot for its flea market.

Panorama of Alazani Valley and religion history in Georgia

Depart for one of the most beautiful sites in the Kakheti region, in the east of the country. Visit the Ninotsminda Monastery in Sagarejo, built in the 6th century and one of the earliest achievements of classical Georgian architecture. The cathedral itself is now in ruins, but the side of the four apses miraculously survives, with magnificent 16th century frescoes.

A short stop at the Bodbé Monastery, where Saint Nino rested while spreading Christianity in Georgia, gives us the opportunity to learn about the story of the evangelising saint, a very important figure in Georgian religion.

We continue our journey to the small, charming village of Sighnaghi, where we stroll through its cobbled streets and along its ramparts, admiring the magnificent panorama of the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus.

The Wine Region

We continue our exploration of the Kakheti region, renowned for its winemaking traditions and rich historical sites. We visit Tsinandali - a historic palace and winery once owned by the 19th century aristocratic poet Alexander Chavchavadze. The palace combines Georgian architecture with Italian inspiration.

We pass through Telavi, the capital and historic town of Kakheti, where we discover a colourful local market.

We then explore the ruins of the Ikalto Academy, where the eminent 12th century poet Shota Rustaveli, author of the great Georgian literary masterpiece "The Knight in the Panther's Skin", studied.

We continue our journey to a local house with an ancient wine cellar, where the locals will show us their traditional wine-making methods, which are very different from European practices. Wine tasting.

Next stop is the 11th century Alaverdi Cathedral.

Return to Tbilisi via the 1600m high Gombori Pass with its picturesque scenery.

From UNESCO Sites to the Greater Caucasus

Depart for Mtskheta - the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Iberia - to visit the Jvari ("Cross") Monastery, perched on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari Rivers. Visit the 11th century Svetitskhoveli ("Life-Giving Column") Cathedral. Opportunity to buy local handicrafts.

On the way to Kazbegi, visit the Ananuri Fortress with its picturesque view of the Jinvali Reservoir. Cross the legendary Georgian Military Road, one of the most beautiful in the world, through valleys, gorges and finally the Cross Pass at 2,300m altitude.

Arrival at Stepantsminda, Kazbegi.

Visit to the Holy Trinity Church of Gergeti, 300m above the village. If you wish, it is possible to hike to Gergeti Church.

A regional history dating from the 1st millennium BC to the 20th century

Early departure for Gori - Soviet city and centre of Georgia, birthplace of Joseph Stalin, where we can visit Stalin's house-museum and his armoured car.

We then discover the abandoned rock-cut city of Uplistsikhe (about 1h30), dating from the 2nd century, overlooking the Mtkvari River.

We continue our tour with a visit to Atenis Sioni, a 7th century Orthodox church about ten kilometres south of the town of Gori. The church is located in the Tana Valley, famous for its historical monuments, authentic landscapes and unique regional wine.

Visit the local wine cellar of the Ateni region, wine tasting.

UNESCO Heritage Sites

Morning departure for Kutaisi, the second largest city in Georgia.

Tour of the city and its UNESCO sites: Gelati Monastery, illustrating Georgian culture from the 10th to the 18th century, the masterpiece of the golden age of medieval Georgia, the centre of science and education during this period. Then a visit to the recently renovated Bagrati Cathedral, the city's landmark, dating from the 10th century.

Mountain region of Racha and its incomparable wine

Drive over the Nakerala Pass to Ambrolauri in the Racha region. Views of the Tqibuli reservoir and Lake Shaori on the way. Racha is a mountainous region known for its special wine due to its unique soil and topography. Visit the Barakoni Church (18th century) and the Nikortminta Church (10th century), a gem of Georgian architecture with its sculptures.

Then visit a winery that produces the famous and very pleasant semi-sweet red wine Khvanchkara, a proud local appellation. Wine tasting.

Return back to Kutaisi.

Martvili Canyon and Svanetian mountains

In the morning, departure for Martvili, in the Samegrelo region. Visit the gorge of Martvili, once the bathing place of the Dadiani family. Admire the scenery, its waterfalls and take a boat ride on the deep green river.

Option: visit an archaeological site - Nokalakevi (3rd century B.C.), which bears witness to the ancient Kholkhid culture, and/or visit the Martvili Monastery (7th-10th century), remarkable for its beautiful frescoes.

Continue to Mestia, in the mountainous region of Svaneti, via the town of Zugdidi. Svaneti is one of the regions associated with the myth of the Argonauts, who extracted gold from lambskin. Situated on the southern slopes of the Great Central Caucasus, it is surrounded by peaks between 3,000 and 5,000 metres high.

The Svaneti Region and the village of Ushguli

Visit to the Mestia Ethnographic Museum and its extraordinary treasures.

We take the difficult road to Upper Svaneti. On the way we visit the village of Adishi and a small church decorated with murals typical of the region. We continue to Ushguli, one of the two highest villages in Europe, recognised by UNESCO, with its authentic, traditional Svanetian towers.

Return to Mestia.

Discover Historical Palaces and the Black Sea coast

In the morning departure from Mestia to Zugdidi. Visit the Dadiani palaces to see the exhibition of Georgian cultural heritage connected with the French Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte, the Tagiloni treasure and the commemorative relics of the Dadiani dynasty.

Continuation to Batumi. On the way, visit the Batumi Botanical Garden, set in the beautiful coastal hills.

Batumi and the Adjarian mountains

Visit Batumi, a majestic seaside city on the Black Sea coast with attractive European and Asian architecture, churches, cobbled streets and an active day and night life, especially in summer.

Explore an archaeological site - the Gonio fortress and museum, followed by a short hike into the mountains to see the Makhuntseti waterfall and ancient stone bridge.

Visit Prometheus Cave and the balneological resort of Borjomi

Morning departure for the Samstke Javareti region. On the way, near Kutaisi, visit Prometheus Cave, a karst cave full of stalactites and stalagmites decorated with colourful laser lights.

We then head to central Georgia to visit Borjomi, with its magnificent park and natural mineral springs.

Troglodyte fortresses region

Depart for the cave town of Vardzia, located in the Javakheti region on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. The rock-cut monastery complex is a picturesque Georgian monument dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The high mountains and rocky cliffs provide a distinctive type of architecture. We visit this site, which requires a good level of physical fitness - the multi-storey caves are connected by narrow tunnels cut into the rock.

Return to Tbilisi via Tsalka, stopping to visit the Poka Monastery on the shores of the wonderful Paravani Alpine Lake.
